There’s SO MUCH going on in Microsoft Teams as a product, how do you even start to talk about it?! In this blog series I’m going to attempt to work my way through the letters of the alphabet, talking about as many features as I can think of in turn.
If you’re new to Teams, hopefully this helps you find your way around. If you’re not new to Teams, maybe you’ll still get some new ideas. Here we go…
X is for X-rated
Do you remember taking lots of notes during meetings? Soon, I’m going to sound like a right old Grandma when I say that, as live meeting captions and transcripts are on a fast-track to become a standard part of all our meetings. The time-saving and clarity this will bring is obviously a great productivity gain…
What about ‘fruity’ language though?
I’ve obviously never been guilty of a potty-mouthed slip, but I’m led to believe that sometimes naughty words just pop right out of your mouth. Possibly not something that you want to have captioned and transcribed for all to read during and/or after the meeting.
Microsoft Teams does have a setting that lets you ‘filter out’ profanity from live meeting captions. Take a wild guess where it’s hiding…? (If you don’t say “The three dots” you need to go back and read all my other A-Z posts!)

In the name of STEM and totally not just for an excuse to say swears, I decided to put the feature to the test.
I joined a meeting with myself in 2 different tenants.
On one tenant, I toggled on the ‘filter profane words in meeting captions’, but in the other tenant, I left the toggle off.
I overlaid one screen with the other (one in dark mode and one in normal mode) so that I could see any differences between the live captions.
As you can see – in one caption my swear is filtered out, but in the other caption, it’s there in black and white:

(I picked a pretty British-specific swear as well, kind of impressed it picked that up.)
So it looks like the profanity filter in Teams is really for your own benefit, and doesn’t ‘protect’ anybody else’s eyes from reading the swear.
The moral is, if you haven’t anything kind to say – Teams will pick it up and write it down!!
