Lyndsay’s A-Z of Microsoft Teams – O is for…

There’s SO MUCH going on in Microsoft Teams as a product, how do you even start to talk about it?! In this blog series I’m going to attempt to work my way through the letters of the alphabet, talking about as many features as I can think of in turn.

If you’re new to Teams, hopefully this helps you find your way around. If you’re not new to Teams, maybe you’ll still get some new ideas. Here we go…

O is for… Office, and Organisers

I’m yet again testing the boundaries of the alphabet this week so bear with me. O is for Office, whether you’re in it, or out of it.

You can now set your location in Teams to show people where you’re working from.

Click on your profile and you’ll see a tiny new icon that lets you specify whether you are working in the office or remotely:

This will display the little location when others look at your profile.

It’s handy to know where people are because:

  • Sometimes working together in person is just a bit easier
  • Sometimes people aren’t able to speak as freely on a Teams call in an office as they might be at home

So I think this is a handy little feature.

Out of office

Also – did you know you can set your out of office from Teams? This has probably been around for ages but I’ve only just noticed it. As usual it’s squirrelled away under the 3 dots at the top:

You can set a schedule for when your out of office message shows and turns off. Doing this on Outlook is sometimes a bit of a faff (mainly because it’s hiding away again under other menus!) so knowing this is within relatively easy reach is a win for me!

Organisers

Did you know that for Teams meetings you can also set co-organisers for your meetings?

The co-organiser has to be someone within your organisation (not external) but once you make them a co-organiser they can do useful things like admit guests from the lobby, present content, and manage breakout rooms for you, while you get on with the business of actually running the meeting.

You can find out exactly what a co-organiser can do in a meeting, and how to make someone a co-organiser, from Microsoft’s support pages here: Add co-organizers to a meeting in Microsoft Teams – Microsoft Support

There you have it! Only a few O features overall, obviously. Onwards to P I say!
