Remap subtask dates in ClickUp is a game changer

When dates change on a project that you’re working on, working out how that affects everything else can be a right pain in the a$$.

Let’s say that you design and make cakes for customers. Not just any cakes mind you, spectacular ones. You charge a premium for your work, so you always make sure that the design and flavour is agreed up front to make sure that your customers are not disappointed.

You know how long it usually takes for your supplies orders to turn around, and you know the date that you need to deliver the cake, so you already know the stages and dates you’re working with.

Then your customer hits you with some new info; you suddenly need to provide the cake a week earlier than originally planned! Luckily for you there’s a key feature in ClickUp, that lets you see how the change in deadline affects all your related tasks: it’s called ‘remap subtask due takes’ and it really does what it says on the tin.

Remap subtask due dates is a ‘ClickApp’ which you need to turn on at space level. Click on the 3 dots next to the name of your space, and head to all space settings:

You should then see ClickApps

Make sure Remap subtask due dates is turned on and save your changes

Once you’ve turned it on, this is how it will work across all lists in that space…

When you have a task that has a due date with a set of dated subtasks:

If you change the due date of the parent task – you’ll get a warning message that asks whether or not you want to remap all the subtask dates:

You can either choose no thanks and leave the subtasks with their existing dates. Or – if you choose change subtask dates, your subtasks dates will be amended relative to the new due date of the parent task.

So, if one of your subtasks was dated 3 dates before the original due date, it will be re-mapped to 3 days before the new due date. You can see here all my subtasks have been brought forward by 1 week, as my deadline was brought forward 1 week:

I love this as it’s a really easy way to see what impact changing a deadline has on any related tasks that you have set up. (And you do need to have the subtasks already dated by the way, otherwise ClickUp won’t know how to redate them for you when you change the due date of the parent task.)

It’s quick and easy to do so you can play around with what different deadlines might look like without spending time thinking too hard about the impact that has on related tasks.
